My Note to Mirror

Wed Feb 18, 2009, 8:14 AM
Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier, and sorry I didn't respond in Vampirella's journal. She blocked me from commenting for some reason, most likely because she's an art thief herself.

It's why I was saddened by your comment...you didn't realize that she just traces over anime cels for popularity? It's not good to look up to a tracer and idolize her for being the "only one reporting art theft", she's extremely hypocritical for this reason. She doesn't care about art, just popularity. She has stated this several times.

The problem with art theft is this: in order to protect their art, the original artist needs to approach Deviantart staff with a DMCA form. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

This Act prevents DA from having any liability with its user generated content (DA cannot get sued by Bandai for Vampirella's traces, but they MUST take them down). But the problem is, alot of content on DA is ripped from Japanese artists and companies, who either cannot read/write english or do not visit/know about DA.

Therefore, nothing can technically be done about blatant art theft UNLESS people like you and I can find proof of said art theft.

*takes deep breath* Now, here's a long, long list of things that help in the stance against art theft.

[link] This group was started when several Devartists noticed their art being stolen and sold on Ebay, as prints without their permission, and..even on a porn DVD.

[link] Extremely useful image search. You have to sign up, but if you ever suspect someone of stealing any image, you put said image into TinEye and it will find it if it's posted anywhere else on the internet.

[link] I'm part of this LJ community, and what you do is..if you see something that looks "fishy", but have no idea who the real artist is, you post it here and most likely someone else will know.

[link] An article on protecting your own art. Since this is DA though, the only option you have is watermarking, but I do suggest that as it's just about the best option there is. NEVER assume that your art won't be stolen. I did, and it was stolen and sold on Ebay, and put in a stupid Youtube video.

I'm sorry this note got so long. But it's just sick how many people are uninformed of the truth. So many people idolize Vampirella, and the hundreds of other tracers on this site, and for what? What they do is not art. You and I could trace an image in less than an hour and upload it, it's not hard. It's not creative. I know though, that alot of people just don't know that the person is tracing sometimes. It's why people need to know, and be informed. Vampirella tried to prevent me from informing you with her blocking, but not only will I note this to you, but I'll leave it up as my journal for a while. People need to know.

Sad part is, no one really knows how bad art theft is, until they see their own art that they put hours into, stolen by a tracer or thief.

Yes, that note got really long, but one of the things I'm adamantly against is art theft. You all probably heard of the dramawhore known as Vampirella. I was reading her goodbye journal and an artist there stated that she liked her because "she was the only one standing against art theft".

This...threw me for a fucking loop it did, mostly because Vamp's "art" was just traces of anime cels. Therefore, she's a thief herself. Ironic eh?

So I had to post and inform her of this, but naturally since I referred her to anti-art theft pages (I made no attack towards Vamp, hence the incredible lulz, she just doesn't want her fans knowing she's a thief), I was blocked from posting on Vamp's page.

Well twatwaffle, you can't ban me from making my own journal.

I know this is a note for someone but I feel the need to chime in(forgive me). You're absolutely right about idolizing someone who has been proven to be a tracer as it happened to me. When I first noticed that ~Oniko added me to her watch list I was really happy about it(as anyone should be when someone watches them) and when I noticed how "popular" she was, it was an added bonus! To think that someone who received gift art all the time, did collaborative works with other popular anime artists was nearing a million pageviews would notice me, it was a trip.

But then she started uploading multiple copies of one images, posting deviations that claimed to mimic a certain artist's style and of course the ED article. When that article was up, I honestly brushed it off as ED featuring someone who really didn't deserve it. I took me going through at least 20 overlay images, reading about people's irl encounters with her and having =Neolucky and a few others say that there are "better people to admire and that you're better off developing your own style", to me and a few others to make me see what was really going on. As shocking as it was, I'm glad I realised the truth and not be one of those people who would blindly follow their idol to the ends of the earth. I honestly hope Oniko learned something from this as I have...

And forgive me for the wall of text D:!

I tried to find her. It would appear that she has left? Ahhhh... there she is. Google ftw! Funny, on her new location she says she likes and image, so she "vectored it." I guess 4 hours of effort equals not ripping off someone? She looks like she's 14.

I'm truly sorry that you have to live with such idiocy. I can only hope they get trheir comeuppance someday.

Gah! To be honest (and this will be STUPID to say on my part) but...I used to idolize her work.T____T On my part I've always wanted to do vectors because I saw the result of them when it was done correctly and I thought it was always so pretty and could make personal wallpapers with it. However, after seeing the artwork she used (wallpapers, TONS of screenshots I could of done just as easily as her, even other's artwork) I stopped watching her. I only have like...5 out of the how many pieces she's done in my favorites and it's only because I thought of them as good references if I ever wanted to draw the pictures on my own time.

I'm just as shocked by what she did with her photo-manipulations as well, doing the same thing; she cheated and either took another artist's work or took just stock and put simple coloring over it and then posted it up. It made me pretty upset when I found that out. I kind of figured out what she was doing and stopped watching her after another artist got into contact with her about it. That wasn't a pretty story to hear about.D8

Plus ED has all the evidence to show that she is indeed stealing. What I hate though is that nothing is being done about it!:explosion:

I think you need a ! It's so disheartening to think about all the scum that litters our world. That's one reason I'm on meds. :(

Very informative, that's the problem with the internet you very rarely actually know what's happening and when you do notice something is up then it's usually too late.

I'm sorry this happened, but thank you for all the links. Some of my work's been taken and put up on forums and such, but such is the cesspool that is the Internet : P

Its one thing to be against art theft, but to accuse people of art theft without any evidence whatsoever is a form of harassment and may just turn out to be against the rules on DA, so continue at your own risk
